Lewis Lapham and Andy Zee share profound concern about the dire state of today's world. To the question of why revolution is not on stage today, they take different approaches and have different answers which will make for an engaged and important conversation:

LEWIS LAPHAM is an author (Pretensions to Empire, Theater of War, many more). He is the former editor of Harpers magazine and now edits Lapham's Quarterly. Excerpts from Lapham's introduction to the Spring 2014 issue on "REVOLUTIONS":

"[Revolution is] the beast in the belly of the news reports, more of them every day in print and en blog, about income inequality, class conflict, the American police state. Why then does nobody have any use for it except in the form of the adjective, revolutionary, unveiling a new cellphone app or a new shade of lipstick?...

"...The plot line tends to repeat itself--first the new flag on the roof of the palace, rapturous crowds in the streets raising banners; then searches, requisitions, massacres, severed heads raised on pikes; soon afterward the transfer of power from one police force to another police force, the latter more repressive than the former (darker uniforms, heavier motorcycles) because more frightened of the social and economic upheavals they can neither foresee or control."

ANDY ZEE is the spokesperson for Revolution Books, a writer for Revolution newspaper and an advocate for Bob Avakian's new synthesis of communism. Andy Zee recently wrote:

"With life a horror for the majority of humanity and the planet in peril, nothing less than revolution is needed for a better world. In the 20th century there were real revolutions, first in the Soviet Union and then in China, that were defeated decades ago. Revolution today means the new synthesis of communism developed by Bob Avakian, a synthesis based on summing up the path-breaking liberating experience of previous communist revolutions-- as well as their shortcomings, sometimes grievous-- while also drawing on a broad range of human experience.

"Avakian has developed a vision and viable framework for a new society that is working to overcome and dig up the roots of all the forms of exploitation and savage inequality that people suffer from today; where wars of plunder and subjugation of nations and cultures are no more; where a new constitution would require safeguarding the environment. All in a framework that gives great scope to intellectual work, ferment, and dissent so that people could consciously and collectively strive for a world where all humanity could flourish."
